Safety Tips For Swimming Pools And Families With Kids
Useful Swimming Pool Safety Tips For Children and Parents.
We all know that almost everyone has fun in water and therefore we all love swimming pools. This is especially true during the hotter months in summer. Pools can often be really great sources of family fun and relaxation. They can give many families the ability to spend a lot of real quality time together. And of course they can be excellent for getting good exercise too.
However we should all realize that swimming pools can also be dangerous environments. This of course is very true when we think about if our children are are risk. Without doubt safety precautions should always be considered for all of us at any age, but if we are talking about younger children, particularly those under the age of 5, then we should be especially careful about their safety when they are around swimming pools.
Watch Out For Smaller Children!
Some will say that it is advisable that you should not install a swimming pool until the youngest of your children is at least five years old. However if you are prepared to be particularly vigilant and extremely careful there is no reason why you should not have one from the very beginning even if you do have younger children in your family
Perhaps the most important rule you should apply when you have a swimming pool and young children in the family is that you should never, under any circumstances at all, allow your small children to be anywhere near your swimming pool on their own. Constant supervision is key here! You will find that most children will soon get to love water and in many cases they are just naturally drawn towards it. However I guess we all already know that it only takes just a split second for a child to accidentally fall in to a pool. So be on the lookout always!
So if you are near the swimming pool with your children but you have to step away even for just the briefest moment then make sure you take your kids with you. Never ignore this rule as the potential consequences don’t bear thinking about!
Constant Supervision is Essential for Kids
One of the very best things that you can do to help keep your children safe near a swimming pool is to install a sturdy security fence right around the perimeter of the pool or pool area. You may even find that this is required by the law in some places around the nation so make sure you check. Anyway, even if it is not actually a legal requirement in your location then you probably already realize it is still one of the best ways to make sure that none of your children can accidentally fall into the pool.
Build your safety fence at least six feet in height and include with it a strong gate which can be easily locked and secure. In addition you should make sure that the fence is made from strong material that cannot easily be broken. For example an iron fence will always work very well for this and will provide a great safety feature for your swimming pool.
Keep Safety Equipment Near At Hand
One other great safety measure you can take is to keep all your usual safety equipment very near your pool’s location at all times. So you should store an emergency phone close nearby and have flotation devices that be easily accessed to help save lives if an emergency were ever to occur. You should also find out about, and get, the rescue tool which is known as the shepherd’s hook. This is a great aid which you can use to pull someone quickly out of the water should the need arise.
Learn CPR and Get the Right Equipment!
You really should learn CPR techniques before having your swimming pool installed if you are serious about pool safety. This will have the potential to help everyone because if an emergency ever occurs, either with children or even adults, then you will have the correct knowledge and the right training that could help save someone’s life.
Many of the other basic safety precautions and measures that you should apply are mostly just common sense.
For instance, if you have friends in your swimming pool who don’t actually really know how to swim that well then it is your responsibility to stay close to them when they are in your pool so that if they get into difficluties you willbe able to help them.
Make Some Rules and Enforce Them!
Also make sure you always enforce your pool rules with everyone who gets in the water and make sure that running and horseplay does not take place. Also you might want to consider having a rule stating that children under a certain age are not allowed into the pool at all unless they wear proper security floatation devices. Remember that these are different than the toy floats that you can buy, so make sure you actually do look at the safety ratings of the flotation devices before buying them for children.
Be safe!
